My Special Event Assignment

My Special Event Assignment is Rio, I love you. It  has 8 stores and 12 directors such as John Turturro, Paolo Sorrentino, Fernando Meirelles. The move came out on September 11, 2014 and it is from Brazilin.
I went to Gene Siskel film Center for my first time. It is completely different than AMC, which I usually go to. I only saw to theater not more. Also, the theater chairs are old. I noticed a poster of Arabic movie, that is good.
I went to this film because I like the trailer. While I am watching I got confused because the movie has 7or 8 stores and almost all of them has an open ending.
I think I will go back to Gene Siskel film Center to watch  other movies.

My Third Reflection about Movies

My Third Reflection about Movies

Who does not like movies? Movies take a big part in my life, They always be interesting topics for me and in the last month, I learned many things about movies starting by movie genre and ending with interesting and funny movie trailer-poster.
As always in pop Culture classes we learn by many ways. We read three articles, Why we crave Horror movies, Tyler Perry's Money Machine and Bollywood Princess. The first article was all new for me, I have never think about why people like or dislike Horror movies. Stephen King in this article lists four reasons of why people Crave Horror movies, to show that they are not scared, make people feel like normal people, fun and peculiar sort of fun, which means enjoying watching people killed. Moreover, this started in a movie where white killed black. I also knew from the second article that Tyler Perry's films are specificity for African Americans.
Making a poster, trailer and a slide from a class PowerPoint, is also one of the things, which we use to learn. First, Tania genre, which was about Bollywood. I did not know that Bollywood movies are more than Hollywood, Bollywood has1041 and Hollywood has only 500 films, and the reason is they are cheaper. We also made posters- trailers about a specific story line, our teacher hand it to us. Jami plot was very interesting and his poster also was very good.
Thinking and seeking, List of terms, I learned new vocabularies about movies such as cinematography and blockbuster. More thing to remember, we had a good discussion about Oscar award and why it always for white and here was my aha moment. When our teacher played Chris Rock part's of  Oscar, then explained that the reason is not racism. Oscar judges are white so when they see movies their culture and what they think is the best is different than black culture which show on most black movies. This was one of the reasons. Also we looked for movie industry like Paramount, Warner Bros and Tyler Perry Studios in order to noticed the differences.
We looked deeper for Bollywood stars, Anupama Chopra and Aishwarya Bachchan. About their lifestyle and their experience at Hollywood. We discussed how Aishwarya Bachchan refused Will Smith offer to go back for a Karva Chauth, which is a day all married women fast from sunrise until moonrise.

Deserve The Waiting.

Deserve The Waiting. It is about an ambition girl called Jas. Graduated from surgeon school as a top of her class. When She was studying, she broke up many times because men were not able to understand how busy she was and how her study was very important for her. She was really disappointed. She works in one of the best hospitals in Washington. One day, while she was working on some papers, she dropped her coffee on them by accident. She did not know what to do. After a few minutes, Johan came and introduced himself to her "Hello, I am Johan, I am an intern. I saw that you dropped your coffee on your work." Jas answer " Hi, I am Jas, a surgeon in heart department, yeah unfortunate, I have to hand them out tomorrow by the lunch time. He offered his help. Jas was so happy and needed his help, so she did not refuse it. After that day, they have been spending a lot of time together. Jas was so glad that Johan can understand her and encourage her in many ways. Also, Johan was very happy with Jas.

Genre - Musicals and Dance

Movies genres are refers to the method of categorizing films based on similarities in the narrative elements from which films are constructed or the emotional responses they elicit. Most theories of film genre are borrowed from literary genre criticism. Besides the basic distinction in genre between fiction and documentary (from which hybrid forms emerged founding new genres, docu fiction and docudrama), film genres can be categorized in several ways.

My Reflection of Interdiction to POP Culture

My Reflection of Interdiction to POP Culture

To know what is Pop culture we have to know what is pop and what is culture. What is Pop Culture reading shows us that pop is a shortcut of popularity and it means " of the people". Culture points to the body of beliefs, behaviors, values, and thoughts that influence us every day.

Moreover, we looked for fads from the 50s to 2010s, pop star presentations, team projects (American popular culture) and pop culture studies. Also, every Monday we start our class with red Eye.

What are the skills we used them?. We read What is Pop Culture, we thought about the important events in American culture and watched them such as Super bowl and Oscar, we have done different researches like pop stars and influential objects, technology, person, music, fashion, events, TV shows and movies. Also, we did two presentations, one was individual and the other one was teamwork.

In the last 4 weeks, I gain much information and I tried to improve my expository skills. I learned that "Pop culture is made up of all the places, people, objects, and events and they can be real or imagined" for example, objects like, Barbie dolls, rap songs, TV shows, I-phones and clothing and Events like, 9/11, the Olympics, the Super Bowl, Thanksgiving dinner, or high school proms and more. I also learned what is the difference between fads and trends. Moreover, I knew that energy drink was popular in the 2000s and The Titanic was popular in90s. Furthermore, from Pop star's presentation I knew that Michel Jordan, is Nike brand face, Barack Obama, was born in Kenya and Steve Jobs, listed as the inventor on 342 lists in the USA and from my pop star which was Angelina Jolie I found that before the 2000s she had never thought about herself as a mother. As well I learned from pop stars as I learned from American popular culture. I knew that yoga was a fad from the 70s. Moreover, from 70s Superman is the most expensive movie. One information I really like was that the DNA discovered in the 50s. I like when my classmates told us information because I keep remembering the interesting information.

My aha moment was when I recognized why I know a lot of things about singer or athletes even though I have no interest in music or sport. I understand that I have this information from people around me because of the Pop culture.

I did not know that popular culture is a mirror of our life and it shows all popular things.

My parts were TV shows and movies. Honestly, I do not learn that much because our periods were not from a long time ago. I still learned some things like, who directed, created and writer some of famous movies. I started with TV shows. I chose The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. Frank Darabont is a creator of The Walking Dead. This series has 7 seasons and it's nominated for 1 Golden Globe. Moving to the other Tv show, which is a Game of Throes. This series has 6 seasons and it's creators by Davis Benioff and D.B Weiss. Moreover, This series won one Golden Globe. The rating for both Series is very good. The Walking Dead Rating is 8.6 of 10 and 9.5 for Game of Thrones. My other part was movies, I chose Inception, X-men2011, X-men 2014 and for the future Me Before You. Starting with Inception, I liked this movie, which directed and wrote by Christopher Nolan. Inception got 8.8 of 10 and it won four Oscars. I think X-Men (The First Class) that came out in 2011and X-Men (Days of Future Past) which was in 2014 have a lot of American fans and that is why I chose them. Also, the first commercially available Jet Pack was in 2010. From Tania's group, I learned that the first phone has a camera was created by Samsung in 2000. Also, I saw the original Cross shoes in Tania part.
Unfortunately, I was so disappointed when I knew that Ken and  Lazar did not do their work in time. After I and Jaime showed our Prezi we did the other members work too.

My Reflection about My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie.

My reflection about My Big Fat Greek Wedding movie.
The movie is 1:30 minutes, It was funny and interesting.
The first thing I recognized about Greek that It is very important that their daughter, sister or any girl in the family get married. Also, she must marry from Greek!
Greek have to go to Greek school.
In the movie they show that no specific time for men to get married but girls should get married as fast as it is possible.
They only thing they want from women is making babies!
In Greek " The man may be the head of  the household. But the woman is the neck, and she can turn the head whichever way she pleases."
Greek also believe that they are the best and everybody else wishes they are Greek.
Something the father repeated many times is "The origin of all words is Greek."
The father feels shame because her daughter chooses not a Greek man.
They baptized the husband in a church to be Greek before he married a Greek girl.
In the wedding, the Parents give their daughter a gift in front all people.

My Reflection about Culture

Being different is good
Being different is good
My reflection about Culture
What is culture? Are there many Kinds of culture? How many? These questions and more across my mind at the first week of our class. One year ago I suggested to one of my teachers in an English institute I studied in to open a culture class but the did not for some reason. The culture things interested me especially the formal things. Three weeks ago I had no idea what is the formal culture that I just said I am interested in. And In this class i learned more and more.
We read, think, seek and do I will give an example for each one. We start our class on Monday by looking at The Red-eye searching for a topic interested us to read it and discuss it with the class or our group so, we read, think and speak. In the class, we all know many things about American culture, What about other cultures?! We have the chance to learn more about other culture by listing to our classmates explaining their Boster. Creating a boster might seems easy but it is not. I think we have to look for different types of posters and see what things are interested people and might be new to them we also have to write an explanation. so, we have to read, search, write, think and do at the same assignment. Moreover, We have read different kinds of reading such as reflection and poem. We also listing, speak and write so, I am sure that I improve my skills and the best part that I enjoyed everything I had done.
Let's be more specific, The first reading we had was Introduction to Culture in this one we looked for the main idea, summarize each paragraph, looked for new words and underline the important ideas. Some of the new words were Inculturation, culture shock, Ethnocentrism, and Ethnographer. From that reading I learned what is culture and the four characteristics of culture. The second we drew the culture Iceberg while we are listing to lecture about The culture Iceberg then we complete a table for culture Iceberg. From this work, we learn the basic things such as The tree kinds of culture Formal, Informal and technical. In those papers we listening, writing, discuss and think. Moreover, we read the Reflection on Culture identity this one was hard for me but as my teacher says if it is too easy it is not helpful.
However, My aha moment was when the teacher explain why American say Excuse me even if they do not touch you. Also, when I read the five stages of culture shock I understood why I had a different feeling when I came to the USA.
More fun and learn at the same time, We had a project using a movie to learn new things about other culture. Before this project, I did not know that I can learn that much from movies. Anymore, I will try to take notes and write new words from movies.
At the end, I confidently can say that now I can understand a little of the American actions.

Saudi Culture

Saudi Culture
I choose five things I think they are interesting and very important in my culture. The firs thing is Islam, We have two Eids to celebrate. The first one is after Ramadan which is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. All Muslims adult have to fast in it from the sunrise to the sunset, except some cases such as patient and some travelers. We usually do not sleep in that day because in Ramadan the stores and restaurant open to 4 am so in Ramadan we usually sleep after the sunrise and wake up 4 or 5 hours far from sunset. That why it is hard to sleep the day before Eid al fiter to wake up early. Some people sleep the whole day! I do not like it I think that is cheating we have to fast at least 5 hours. The another Eid is Eid Al Hajj it is after Alhajj. I need more than 5 papers to explain that, simply it when Muslims done Alhajj in Makah.
The second is Dressing. Women must wear abaya and hijab when she go out. Abaya is a black tall dress with long sleeves. In the past, it used to be black in black but nowadays it can be colorful. Hijab is like a scarf women use it to cover their hair. Some women cover their face too using the hijab or a cloth that covers the face as a part of sartorial hijab called niqab. Official dress of men is a long white dress with a scarf on their head called shemagh or ghutrah. The different is ghutrah is white and shemagh is red with white.
The part I think everyone love Food in my city we have many meals that a lot of Saudi do not know such as Kabesa, Aseda, Sago, Afosa, Salona, Mahmos and more. Usually, my grandmother cooks them. Moreover about food but now with family. In Saudi Arabia Family values is one of the most important things for me family is the most important thing in my life. In my family usually, we have lunch together on Friday. After lunch, we talk about anything we want while we enjoy Arabic coffee and desserts. The last thing is Greeting, both men and women shook hands and kisses. As Muslims Men can not shake women hand if she is not his mother, sisters, aunts, grandmother, waif and his mother in low. The same thing for women, simply women can not touch any men she can marry so she can shake her father, brother, uncle, grandfather husband hand and her father in law.
Those were the five culture things I chose. I hope that I explained them clearly and you know more now about Saudi culture
